How a profile gets reported

It starts with the work in front of an editor, either in the studio, at a show, or failing that in high resolution with a condition report attached. Dates, training and exhibition history get checked against the records and then against the artist.

The artist reads the draft for factual errors before it goes live. The judgment and the wording stay ours. No one pays to be profiled, and a profile cannot be bought.

Where the price brackets come from

For artists who sell through our partner gallery RakovGallery, the ranges are built from that gallery's sales records and current asking prices. For artists sold through partner platforms, we use the public asking prices on those platforms.

We round the numbers and publish them as brackets: Under $2,000, $2,000–$8,000 and $8,000+, the same brackets the directory filter uses. A range describes what work of a typical size and period costs right now. It is not an appraisal of a specific piece, and it is not investment advice.

When the data is updated

Our market editor rechecks prices and availability every quarter. A biography changes when the career does: a new series, a show, a different gallery. The Artists to Watch list is rewritten once a year and carries its date, so you can see how old the judgment is.

Our income comes from affiliate partnerships. Some of the artists we profile sell through our partner gallery RakovGallery, which pays us a commission on a referred sale. Others sell through partner platforms, where a few of the links are affiliate links, tagged as such, and may earn us something if you buy through them.

Corrections and contact

If a price, a date or a fact looks wrong, write to editor@laart.us and name the page. Every report gets checked. Plain errors are fixed on the page; when a correction changes the substance of a profile, we note it at the foot of that profile.

The same address reaches an editor with a question about an artist, or use the Ask a Curator page.
